Dirty Dancing hen party dance class in Plymouth — hens practising mambo steps together in the studio
Baby energy, guaranteed.

Nearly four decades on, this film still does something to a room full of women that no other soundtrack manages — which is why Dirty Dancing has been requested more often than almost anything else on our menu of hen party dance classes in Plymouth. There's usually one hen who knows every line, three who cry at the final scene on principle, and a bride who has been practising the run-up in her kitchen since roughly 2009. We build the session for all of them.

Your teacher works through the film's vocabulary in order of confidence: the mambo basic, the hip circles, the cheeky shimmy, that iconic crossed-arms roll — then strings them into a routine set to the numbers you're hoping for. On the famous lift, we're straight with every group: it's genuinely risky without training, so we either keep a low, safe version between willing volunteers or choreograph a lift-free finale that photographs just as triumphantly. If retro romance is your gang's whole personality, Grease scratches a similar itch, and Strictly covers the ballroom-glamour end of things.

Summer bookings have a particular magic here — you're twenty minutes from finishing the routine to standing on the waterfront with the Sound glittering behind you like the Kellerman's lake, only with better pasties. And since the film ends with the greatest partnered dance in cinema, it's no coincidence how many of our brides go on to book first dance lessons in Plymouth for the wedding itself.

Scene by scene

Your hour at
Kellerman's.

It opens exactly as the film does — awkwardly, and on purpose. A warm-up of exaggerated stiff-Baby walking dissolves the giggles, then the mambo basic gets everyone's hips moving on the two. Hip circles arrive next, then the shimmy and the body roll, each one drilled to a different track from the soundtrack until the sequence knits together.

The finale is saved for last: the group parts, the bride makes her run — into a low assisted pose, a spin-and-catch or a dramatic dip, whatever's right for her — and the room loses it every single time. Ninety-minute bookings squeeze in extra choreography, more finale rehearsals and repeat takes for the cameras.

Common questions

Dirty Dancing,
clarified.

What brides and organisers ask us most about this theme in Plymouth, answered honestly — and yes, the lift question comes first.

01Will we do THE lift?

We'll be honest where others fudge it: the full overhead lift is a trained-professionals move, and we don't promise it. What we offer instead is a choice — a low, safe assisted pose between willing hens, or a lift-free finale with a run, a catch and a dip that looks every bit as cinematic on camera.

02Can we get the lift-free finale on camera?

(I've Had) The Time of My Life almost always closes the show, with Do You Love Me and Hungry Eyes the usual suspects for the teaching sections. If your group bleeds for Cry to Me or She's Like the Wind, say so on the form and we'll work it in.

03None of us can mambo — does that matter?

Neither could Baby, and that's rather the point. The mambo basic is a four-count step your group will have by the end of the first song, and every move after it is layered on gently. Arriving hopeless and leaving triumphant is the whole narrative arc.

04Can we dress up — and should someone bring a watermelon?

Denim shorts, black vests and one pink dress for the bride is the classic squad look, and yes, a watermelon makes an outstanding photo prop. Everything worn or carried comes from your own bags though — we supply the choreography and the music, not the fruit or the outfits.

05Does the bride get the Baby moment in the finale?

The finale is hers: the group forms the dance floor, she makes the run, and the ending — dip, catch or safe assisted pose — happens to the exact bars of music you're imagining. Bring tissues for her mum; we've seen it too many times to pretend otherwise.

06Can the class run where we're staying?

Sessions run at a studio we hire in Plymouth city centre, with the waterfront ten minutes away for your Kellerman's-style evening after; the confirmed address arrives with your booking. If the whole party is staying under one roof somewhere roomy, we're happy to travel to you instead.
