Why Grease works

The musical every
hen do knows.

Grease hen party dance class in Plymouth — hens mid hand jive in a hired studio
Pink Ladies in training.

Ask a room of women aged nineteen to seventy-nine to name one film musical and you'll hear the same answer, which is exactly what makes this the safest crowd-pleaser on our list of Plymouth hen party themes. Nobody needs the plot explained, nobody needs persuading about the soundtrack, and the moment the first drumbeat of a hand jive kicks in, even the hen who "doesn't dance" discovers that apparently she does. Half the class arrives already singing.

Your teacher choreographs a medley inspired by the Grease songbook — think diner-scene hand jive, T-Bird swagger, a slow-burn strut for the big transformation reveal — built move by move so total beginners keep pace with the friend who did musical theatre at school. It's the singiest class we run bar our full Musicals theme, and if your group loves a film-finale lift moment there's a kindred spirit in Dirty Dancing. We should say plainly: our routines take inspiration from the era and the songs, and we've no connection to any film studio.

Costume-wise the rule is simple — we don't supply outfits, so if the group owns pink satin jackets, leather looks or chiffon neck scarves, bring the lot and stage the photos on the Hoe afterwards with the Sound glittering behind you. More than one bride has enjoyed her transformation strut so much that the couple booked first dance choreography with us before the confetti was even ordered.

Start to finish

From warm-up
to drive-in.

Fifties rock'n'roll does the warm-up's heavy lifting — it's physically impossible to stretch to that music without grinning. The hand jive comes first because it's seated-wedding-guest simple and instantly satisfying, then the class picks up kicks, twists and struts one section at a time, each rehearsed until the slowest learner is comfortable.

Everything then gets stitched into the medley, with the bride's transformation strut saved for the climax and the group frozen in a jukebox pose on the last note. The ninety-minute booking buys a whole extra musical number plus time to run the finale for the cameras until the group chat has its new pinned video.

Grease specifics

The word on
the routine.

Answers to what organisers ask most about the Grease class — with the enquiry form standing by for the properly niche questions.

01Which Grease numbers do we learn?

A medley of fifties-style rock'n'roll built around the numbers everyone knows from the Grease songbook, chosen with your group in mind. Our choreography takes its inspiration from the era and the music — we're an independent dance company with no connection to any film or studio.

02Is the hand jive tricky to learn?

It's the friendliest move in the whole catalogue — hands only, taught at half speed, then gradually cranked up until the room is flying. Because arms do all the work, it suits every fitness level, and it's usually locked in before the first water break.

03Can we split into Pink Ladies and T-Birds?

Absolutely, and it's brilliant fun when groups do. Your choreographer can stage sections as a playful face-off between the two gangs before everything merges for the finale. Just say on the form that you fancy teams and roughly how you'd like to divide.

04Do you provide the pink jackets?

We don't supply costumes or accessories of any kind, so wardrobe is proudly bring-your-own. Plenty of parties order matching satin jackets online or raid fancy-dress boxes, and honestly the mismatched home-made efforts often steal the show in photos.

05Which bits are saved just for the bride?

Her own transformation moment — the strut, the hair-flick, the gang parting around her like a Hollywood crowd scene. How showy it gets is calibrated to her; shy brides can share the moment with a maid of honour, show-offs can have the full slow-motion treatment.

06How close are we to the bars afterwards?

Sessions happen at a studio we hire in Plymouth city centre — moments from the Theatre Royal end of town, with the precise address confirmed as part of your booking. If the party's holed up in a rental with a generous lounge, the class can travel to you instead.
